Name: Anthony Ashley Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury
Date of Birth and Age: 22/7/1621 Fifty three.
Nationality: English
Occupation/Status: Politician
Appearance: Not very handsome, with greasy hair often badly disguised under a periwig. He has bad gout which makes him limp, a shrewd face and squinting little blue eyes that are dull and never sparkle. Well built despite his disability, often unsmiling, his thoughts are ever on his latest scheme.
Personality: Clever and cunning in the extreme. He has some positive attributes and can give sound and solid advice, however, like his friend Buckingham, his actions usually have ulterior motives…he is power hungry and full of self importance. He is always looking for ways to advance his prestige and gain things for himself. He desires control over the King through the power of Parliament. Despite differing in views of religion (he is a staunch Protestant), he is not afraid of scheming with people such as Frederick de Bourbon…Shaftesbury is not a man anyone can ever trust.
History: Born in the county of Dorset, suffered the death of both his parents at a young age. He was raised by relatives and family friends, while being subjected to financial mulcting through the Court of Wards. Educated largely by Puritan tutors, he attended Exeter College, Oxford. While there he formented a minor riot and left without taking a degree; nevertheless, he was admitted into Lincoln's Inn.
After the fall of Lord Clarendon in 1667, Lord Ashley became a prominent member of parliament. Ashley became Lord Chancellor in 1672, and was created Earl of Shaftesbury. He is against the Catholic James, Duke of York ascending the throne, and is aligned with Buckingham in trying to somehow place the young Duke of Monmouth on the throne, a Protestant who can easily be ruled by Parliament…
Roleplay sample:
Scribbling away at the parchment, Shaftesbury sighed with satisfaction as the last grating scratch finalised the deed he had just drawn up. Though some would think this paper before him would make him a traitor, in his mind he saw the King’s smiling face…the King nodding and signing…Shaftesbury in power…
“My lord…?” his Steward interrupted his thoughts. Quickly Shaftesbury shoved the paper under several others and locked them away in his dark wooden drawer. Sighing again, this time out of annoyance, he turned and raised an eyebrow.
“The party has arrived at Whitehall.”
Shaftesbury blinked and nodded.
“Excellent…” was all he said, before turning back to tidy his desk.
